New Thing #10--I Have a Dream

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King day today, I downloaded and read his complete "I Have a Dream" speech.

I graduated from school before King's birthday became a federal holiday, and I don't remember studying his life much. I think I, along with most people, can quote the highlights of the speech, but I've never really digested the whole thing. I found out it's way more than the sound bites that I'll hear on the news tonight.

I also did some research and learned a little bit more about Dr. King's life. I was surprised to learn that later in his life he spoke out on anti-poverty issues for all Americans (the Poor People's Campaign) and opposed the Vietnam war.

The "I Have a Dream" speech can be found at http://www.mlkonline.net. Here's a link to some really thought-provoking pictures about segregation then and now: http://www.newsweek.com/id/94787
