New Thing #327--Incompatible?

When I opened the refrigerator at lunchtime today I heard the leftover pumpkin pie calling my name. However, I'm trying eat healthy meals at home to counteract all the holiday eating out (and I really don't think there's enough pumpkin in a slice of pie to count as a serving of vegetables) so I continued my search.

The fruit and vegetable bins were full, but the refrigerator shelves were pretty bare. One thing we did have was yogurt, both plain nonfat and fruit-flavored.

I enjoy eating yogurt. One of my favorite snacks is a cup of fruit-flavored yogurt mixed with uncooked oatmeal and a spoonful of cocoa powder. It keeps me full for a long time, and takes care of my chocolate cravings.

I also like plain yogurt. I use it in place of sour cream on baked potatoes and chili. Sometimes I add cut up vegetables, or mix it with salsa and cumin when I want a light meal. That's what I decided to do today; after the yogurt and salsa were mixed I realized I wanted to add some fiber. We were gifted with a "Sams-sized" box of instant oatmeal last weekend, so I grabbed a packet of Original flavor, added it to my yogurt, and mixed it in. Today I ate oatmeal with salsa.

It was ok, but not great. It's almost like a non-transitive paradox--if two pairs of food go well together, it doesn't necessarily mean that putting them all together will be good. I realized that I associate oatmeal with sweet, not savory seasonings.

I don't think I'll be recreating this dish any time soon.

  1. Be careful of the uncooked oatmeal. If you drink too many liquids after eating the uncooked oatmeal, it may expand in your stomach and cause you to, um, upchuck. Take it from someone who has experienced the phenomenon first hand.

  2. Thanks for the information...I think!

I had a bad experience eating too many dried apricots once. It wasn't pretty.

  3. Does that count as fusion cooking? Sometimes things you don't think go together in fact taste nicer than you think.. I once had a fruit scone with fish paste (ok it was purely by chance as I thought it was plain scone) and it tasted nice, the fruit adding the sweetness to the fish flavoured paste... and I regularly ate it when I was still working there.

  4. I had a co-worker, who was trying to substitute healthy alternatives into her meals recently. She put yogurt into tuna salad instead of mayo. Her verdict: It was putrid...
